Installing Myriad News Capture v6

Modified on Tue, 24 Sep at 12:55 PM

Introduction

Myriad News Capture v6 is the latest release of the Myriad News software. The Capture application is responsible for automatically capturing and storing new text or audio from news providers such as IRN / Sky News Radio / PA etc. as well as capturing from RSS feeds. Finally, it's responsible for running "housekeeping" to remove old expired stories and audio when they are no longer needed.

With the release of Myriad News v6, there is no longer a dedicated "Myriad News" application, instead all journalist access is via the Myriad Anywhere News web interface, so you only need to install Myriad News Capture. You may also need to install Myriad Remote Edit Server if you haven't already done so as part of a wider Myriad Playout installation.

Installation Steps

Installing Myriad News Capture is very straight forward and consists of the following steps:

Downloading and installing Myriad News Capture

You can download the latest Myriad News Capture installer from the dedicated Myriad News 6 Support area on the Broadcast Radio Website

One you have downloaded the News Capture installer, double click on it and follow the installation wizard to fully install Myriad News Capture. On the last page, tick the option to "Launch Myriad News Capture v6" and click Finish

Configuring Myriad News Capture

If you haven't already launched Myriad News Capture, double click on the desktop icon to load the application.

Note: If you already have some other Myriad v5 or Myriad v6 software configured on this computer then you may find some of these steps are automatically skipped.

File and database location

The first screen is the "Data Locations" window, this is where you specify the Microsoft SQL Server connection and where to find the Myriad data files.

Enter the details for the SQL Server Instance that you are using to store your data and click the green tick button to check that it can successfully connect to the SQL Server. If you have not already installed SQL Server, you can find full details in the Installing SQL Server article.

If you already have Myriad v6 at your station, then enter the correct network location for your Myriad data files in the "Location of Data Files" text box - for example:

\\MyServer\Myriad\Data

If this is the first time you have installed any Myriad Software, or if you are just testing out Myriad News, then you will need to enter the location to store the files in. We recommend storing your data on a dedicated drive or network location. For example, if you are going to store the data locally on this computer and install Remote Edit server locally to provide the remote access then you might enter:

D:\Myriad\Data

Once you have entered the data, click OK to continue. If the folder doesn't exist already, you will be prompted to create it:

Creating your News database

The next window you will see is the "Select News Database" screen. If you already have an existing Myriad News v6 database that you want to use, just select this and click OK. If you want to create a new one, click the "Create New Database" button in the bottom left hand corner and enter a suitable name for the new database - for example "Hot Radio News Database" and click OK:

The database will be created, and you can then select it and click OK:

Connecting your Myriad News database to a Myriad 6 database

You will then be shown a similar window asking you to choose which Myriad Database to connect your News Database to. If you already have Myriad database, select it and click OK. If you don't, then repeat the above steps to create a new Myriad database, and enter a suitable name, for example "Hot Radio Myriad Database", click OK, and then select the database and click OK:

You may then see 2 or 3 message boxes asking you to allow Myriad News to activate an "HTTP Listener" - this is used by various parts of the Myriad family to share information. Click Yes and then Yes on any Windows popups that appear.

Once this process has completed then you should now see the main Myriad News Capture window:

Adding your first capture "Source"

Myriad News Capture uses "Sources" to check for new content and download and store it in the database. Each Source corresponds to a news provider - for example you may have 1 source that is downloading from IRN News, and another from PA news. Each source is responsible for routing each story that it captures into a suitable category as well as checking for any key words.

Before adding a new source, you will first need to "login" to the Myriad News capture to unlock the menus. On the Security menu, click Login. On a brand-new system, you may just be automatically logged in as we have not yet setup any security, but if you already have users configured then enter your login name and password and click OK.

On the Sources menu, click Add News Source and you will see the "News Templates" window:

Select the news source template that you want to use and click OK - in this example we are going to select the IRN News template - you will be asked to enter the name you want to give the Source that will be created from this template - you can alter this if you want to, or just click OK.

You will then see the News Source Settings window where you can choose which Media Range to import the audio into, and if you wanted to alter the actual capture configuration, you can do this via the Advanced Configuration button:

Click OK to save your Source configuration and your main window should now look like this:

High lit in green above is the countdown to when the source will next check for new stories - you can click the 'play' button to start an immediate check and you will then see stories being captured and appearing in the log at the bottom of the window.

Setting up user security to grant users access to the news content

If you haven't "logged in" to Myriad News Capture, click the Security menu then Login. Then choose User Management:

This will open the User Management window from where you can add/edit/delete all of your active users. More information about configuring your user accounts can be found in this article. Users will need to be in either the Presenters, Producers or Administrators security group to be able to remotely access your news database.

You can also manage your users via Myriad Anywhere in the Admin/Station Management and User Security area.

Configuring Myriad Remote Edit Server to access the News database

If you have not already downloaded and installed the Myriad Remote Edit Server software, you can download it from the main Myriad Playout Support pages at https://www.broadcastradio.com/myriad-6-playout-support#Download - click the button to download the latest version and select the "Myriad Support Applications" download.

Once the installer has downloaded, double click on it and follow the wizard to install the Support Applications and you will then see a Remote Edit Server icon on your desktop. Double click this to start the software and follow any prompts that it raises.

There is also a full walkthrough of how to configure Myriad Remote Edit Server and connect it to the Myriad Anywhere Cloud system available here.

Once Myriad Remote Edit Server is running, click on the Settings menu, then choose Myriad Remote Edit Server Settings:

In the lower "Options" section, tick the check box to "Allow users to use a Myriad News database:" and then click the button on the right hand side to select the correct News database, then click OK to return to the Remote Edit Server Settings window, then click OK again to save that setting. You may be prompted to restart the software, if so, close it and re-launch it.

Your remote users should now be able to browse and access your news database via Myriad Anywhere:

Optional extra steps

Automatically starting Myriad News Capture v6 when the pc starts

We recommend installing Boot Stuff v6 which will automatically load applications for you when a computer starts up. It can also monitor the applications and automatically re-start them if they closed. It also has options to configure Windows to automatically login as a specified user.

You can download it from https://www.broadcastradio.com/utilities-sql-installers#BootStuff
