Working around the speeding up/down audio bug in Google Chrome/Microsoft Edge 106

Modified on Tue, 24 Sep at 12:43 PM

On Thursday the 13th of October, Google pushed out a software update to all Google Chrome users. Microsoft published the equivalent update to the Edge browser on Friday.

We have identified a critical bug in the update which affects connections to Broadcast Radio Live. Users may experience 'stutter', robotic sound, or a changing of pitch on a wireless connection. Unfortunately, Google and Microsoft do not provide a mechanism to 'downgrade' their browsers.

This issue does not affect users using Firefox or the newest versions of Safari. However, Chrome and Edge use a modern connection technology that Firefox and Safari don't yet support - so in some scenarios, changing browser may not be ideal.

Installing the Chromium Browser

Google Chrome is based on a project called Chromium. Chrome is the version that allows you to sign in and sync your settings to the cloud. You can run Chromium and Chrome at the same time without issue.

Make sure you complete all of the steps, otherwise you may get a blank screen when connecting to BR Live.

  1. Firstly, download the Chromium installer.
  2. You may see a warning that the download is not common. Click the three dots next to the download and click Keep

You may also need to click Show more, then Keep anyway

  3. Once it has downloaded, click on the installer to run it.
  4. From the Start Menu, find Chromium and open it.
  5. Click on the right hand side menu and open Settings

  7. Make sure the option Block third party cookies in Incognito is chosen

  8. We're all ready to go! Go to https://yourstation.myriadanywhere.com and connect to the studio as normal.

Important: your settings will not carry across to the Chromium browser, so make sure you have the right microphone selected.
